What is the Family History Group about?

The Family History Group meets the first Wednesday of each month in October and November and from January through June at 7:00 pm. Our meetings are open to all and not just BCIT retirees, and all friends and members of the BCIT community are most welcome to join us.

Our meetings are very informal and light refreshments are available. Assistance is available for those who may just be starting on family research, and we have a number of members with some experience in both North American and European research.

Presently the majority of those doing research are mainly interested in the British Isles and North America, but we welcome all, no matter in which part of the world your interests may lie, and expertise in other areas would be invaluable.

For those who are new to Family History, there are a number of lessons available for free on the internet. This one, "Beginner's Guide to Family History Research", starts at a fairly basic level but is also complete with overviews, details, glossary, reources, etc.
There are many other tutorial sites on the web which can be found simply by doing a search for "genealogy tutorials" or something similar. You'll be amazed at what an active 'hobby' this is worldwide.

The Burnaby location of the LDS Family History Centre at 5280 Kincaid (at Royal Oak) is very convenient for people in the GVRD. It is open four days a week with very helpful volunteer staff. Phone (604) 299-8656 for more information and to confirm their opening hours.

More information about the BCITRA Family History group can be obtained by phoning Alan at (604)299-7155.
